I started thrifting when I was in college. I love thrifting probably even more than I love throwing up peace signs in photos. At first, it started out as a way to save money when I was shopping. Now, it’s my way of continuing to practice circular fashion as much as I can.
I’ve shopped at a ton of resale sites including thredUP, Poshmark, Swap.com, Fashionphile, The RealReal, Etsy, and more including a ton of independent sellers. I always find myself heading to my local Goodwill, My Sister’s Closet, and Uptown Cheapskates and it’s even more fun with friends.
Nearly half of my closet is thrifted, maybe even more than that, and I find that I am often asked “how do you even find stuff when you’re thrifting?”
Shop with a List
One of the best things to do is create a list of things you’re looking for before going to the store. I was so impressed with my friend when she did this and it made it much easier for her to search through the racks, because she had a great idea of what she needed to find!
Creating a list including things like “knit tops, black denim shorts, silk button downs” helps elminate large sections of the store!
Work within a color palette
This is also a great way to shop intentionally. Create a color palette for your closet. Pick out the colors that look best on you and try to work within those. If you know your colors, you’re less likely to buy something that you won’t wear.
Color palettes can change by season, but if you know your colors, even by season, sifting through large racks of clothing gets even easier.
Don’t forget about the Men’s section
Some of my best finds have come from the men’s section. I’m pretty particular about what I’ll shop for in the men’s section, but it’s my go-to place for fall flannels, crewneck sweatshirts, and oversized fall jackets.
What I’m wearing:
Top: thrifted at thredUP
Jeans: Wrangler
Belt: thrifted at Poshmark
Shoes: thrifted at The RealReal (Get $20 off your first order and 20% off with the code REAL)
Sunglasses: Ray-ban
