Living in Arizona this summer has really opened my eyes as to what summer heat really is. When I was still in grade school, it got pretty toasty in Redlands over the summer, but I don’t think I’ve been this hot since then.
I talk about the heat in Arizona all the time, and for good reason. People forget all the time how easy it is to get dehydrated and overheat here in the summer. I can’t tell you how many people on my tours I had to remind to drink water or even bring water on a ninety-minute walking tour.
So if you’re still struggling in triple-digit heat right now too, hopefully these tips can help you stay cool!
Invest in a windshield cover.
The first thing I have to recommend it getting a windshield cover for your car. I used to think they didn’t do that much but after forgetting to put it up one day, it instantly changed my mind. Just think of how hot it is standing in the sun versus in the shade. Essentially, it’s the same logic with keeping your car in it’s own shade rather than relying on trying to park under trees. If you have leather seats, this is a lifesaver.
Wear loose and breathable clothing.
Trying to peel off too-tight clothing after you’ve worn it on a hot day is not fun. I prefer cotton tops (not polyester or fabric that holds sweat in) in loose shapes with either shorts or a skirt.
Prevent chafing with deodorant.
I’m not sure who told me this, but if you put a bit of deodorant in between your thighs, it helps to prevent chafing. Thick thighs may save lives but that chafing is still rough.
Wear sunscreen.
This really should go without saying, but wear sunscreen! It’s not only so much better for your skin, but it helps you stay cool. When your skin burns, your skin is actually hot to the touch – that’s why cold showers and aloe vera feel good on a burn. Keep yourself safe and cool, by reapplying sunscreen on really intense and sunny days.
Don’t overexert yourself.
Again, kinda obvious, but don’t go running in hundred degree heat. That’s just asking for heat exhaustion. Take it easy on hot days and do active things in the morning or night when it’s a lot cooler.
Stay hydrated.
Drinking water has never been easy for me. I actively have to remind myself to do it throughout the day. I aim for about 80 oz of water a day to stay hydrated in the summer, which is why I carry a 40 oz. bottle with me at all times. In the summer, don’t leave the house without a water bottle!
To help keep myself hydrated, I’ve also been swapping my usual juice and carbonated beverages for Spindrift Sparkling Water. The product looks good in glasses too because of the fruit juice coloring! Definitely serve it chilled and you can serve it over ice as well. It also tastes great in cocktails or mocktails!
