Summer Hair Care Tips

I was so so excited to share my most recent travel post from LA with you all today, but I just realized I’m currently working with Torrance’s Tourism board, and cannot post about another “competitor” for 3 months. Los Angeles (at least the area I was in) is considered a competitor and to not jeopardize my relationship, I’ve decided to share this super cool hair care post with you instead.

Every four years, I do this crazy thing and cut off my hair. It’s not necesarily a ritual or anything – I just get bored (or annoyed) and chop it all off. Every time, I’m glad I did it, but I still want my hair to grow quickly to transition out of that awkward phase between short and long.

Lately, I’m at an impasse with my hair. It’s heathier than it’s ever been and I love it. I want to chop it off again because I’m loving the messy lob look, but it took me so long to grow out. (Does anyone have an opinion on my hair? Not that it matters, I’ll totally do what I want anyway, but do you all like it long?)

However, since so many of you comment on how long and healthy my hair looks, I’ve decided to share these hair care tips with you today. My hair didn’t always look like this. In middle school and high school, I had split ends and dry hair all day every day. You too can change how your hair both looks and feels.

Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

I’m a big fan of Hask Hair. They’re inexpensive and I love their products. I’ve done a few blog posts on them before and I always love how my hair feels after using. I did a review a while back on their Greek Yogurt collection, but I’m currently using their Moisture Rich Shampoo and Conditioner. I’ve used other brands in the past, but Hask is affordable and their products work well. Mainly, just make sure you’re using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Using a shampoo and conditioner for extra moisture in my hair is essential in the summer, especially in dry climates.

You can get Hask Shampoo at ULTA or on their website HERE!

Use a deep conditioner once each week.

In the summer, the ends on my hair get especially dry. I like to use a repairing mask or deep conditioner once each week to keep it looking healthy. Currently, I use Hello Hair, Hask Moisture Rich Deep Conditioner, and Aveda Dry Remedy. I rotate the products based on the status of my hair. To treat dullness, Hello Hair is a great product. For dryness, any deep contioner like Hask’s will do. For breakage, Aveda’s Dry remedy is my go-to.

Eat nutrient-rich foods.

You are what you eat, literally. Your hair need nutrients in food in order to grow long and strong. Foods with a lot of Vitamin C, Biotin, and Iron have proven to be good for you hair. Lots of sugar intake, fast food, alcohol and diet soda consumption have proven to lead to weak, brittle hair and hair loss.

Drink a lot of water.

Water is the easiest way to grow your hair. Water actually helps the body to process and flush out toxins faster, which in turn is good for your hair. About 8 cups of water a day is a good rule of thumb. For how much you should be drinking, try dividing your body weight (in pounds) by 2, and your end result is approximately how many ounces your should drink each day.

Turn off the heat.

Especially in the summer, when the air can be already hot and dry, try turning off the heat a little more often to give your hair a break. It’s common knowledge that heat styling is bad for your hair, but it can be even worse combined with hotter weather, chlorine from pools, or too much salt water from the ocean. I probably only style my hair with heat once or twice each week.

Don’t wash your hair everyday.

Washing your hair every day can actually make it more dry or greasy! I only wash my hair every other day, which leaves my scalp feeling more relaxed since I’m not constantly stripping the natural oils away and it produces much less oil, resulting in less greasy hair. It’s pretty weird how that works, but it does.

Rinse with cool water.

Again, back to the heat damage. I always rinse my hair with cool water to help lock in the moisture and any conditioner I may have used. I read somewhere once that this helps restore softness and shine.

Use softer ponytail bands.

Rough ponytail bands can cause stress on the hair which leads to hair breakage. If you can, try alternating hair styles like braiding your hair one day and putting it up the next. Even better, try to stay away from rough bands and stick with the stretchy fabric bands that will pull your hair less.

Don’t brush your hair while wet.

I am so so guilty of this. A comb is way better than a brush on wet hair. A brush is too harsh on wet, brittle hair and can cause breakage in the long run. If you don’t like using a comb (guilty), try putting a softening or moisturizing product (I use MoroccanOil) in your hair and brushing it after it’s gotten the chance to air dry. This has significantly improved my hair softness and texture.
