I have been in and out of fitness for a long time. When I was in high school, I used to play basketball and golf and was always in good shape without really trying. Now, I feel like I can barely run a mile. However, fitness and health is becoming a more important part of my life as I get older. I want to be in better shape and love the way my body feels and looks. So, I’ve been trying to hop back on the fitness wagon for a long time and it’s really hard.
Take it from me, I get it. But if you’re trying to work out again, I have a few tips to share with you.
Get cute new workout gear.
Ok, just like every other girl out there, I am a huge fan of cute workout gear that can take you from the gym to your morning coffee. Don’t even get me started on leggings – I’m pretty sure they’re a creation from the heavens. I recently found tasc Performance and love my new leggings!
tasc is reinventing performance lifestyle apparel— starting with their fabrics. Their fabrics are made from natural sources like bamboo and organic cotton making them more sustainable and chemical free. As a bonus, their fabrics also are moisture-wicking, provide UPF 50+ sun protection, and are odor-resistant! It’s perfect for taking your leggings from the gym to out-and-about without smelling or feeling like you were just at the gym.
The leggings I got are so cute and so flattering! While I was hesitant about buying non-black leggings at first, I love how the seams and two-tone style add some flare to this pair. The back of the leggings do wonders for my backside too (if ya know what I mean).

Pick the perfect playlist.
Personally, I love using Spotify for my workout playlists. I hardly ever have time to make playlists myself, so premade playlists are totally my jam (see what I did there). I’ve been using their Power Workout and Cardio Playlists lately and I’ve got to say, they’re pretty good. I hardly ever feel the need to skip a track.
I also recommend choosing a workout based on what you’re doing that day. For example, I prefer remixes and songs with a fast beat for cardio workouts – it keeps me going! But you have to learn and do what works for you!
I also like having wireless headphones to make working out with music easier. I never have to worry about my wires getting all tangled up while doing any type of workout. Currently, I’m using headphones from Sudio that offer noice reduction and Bluetooth technology. Bonus points for looking so sleek while being functional too. Find a workout that you don’t hate.
Ok, I don’t like working out. Some people love it. I am not one of those people.
I have found, however, that I like some workouts more than others. Kickboxing is a cardio workout that keeps me on my toes and can usually keep my interest. Running is a bit more difficult for me. The more monotonous the workout – the harder it is for me to focus.
Lately, I’ve been doing Kayla Itsines BBG workout since I heard so many people rave about it, but occassionally, I switch it up for workouts on Beachbody on Demand. I’ve also recently found a Running app that has proved to be a decent program for getting me back in shape! Even though it’s just running, it’s a good mix of walking and running and perfect for beginners trying to get back in shape.
The point of my little rant is to find something you like enough to keep doing. If you hate it, you won’t do it.
Invest in good shoes.
Good shoes are essential for a good workout. Trust me, bad shoes will not make you want to workout ever again. If you’re going to be doing high-intensity activities, like jumping, shoes are even more important.
I use basic fitness trainers that are good for a variety of different workouts. I also have a pair of running shoes for when I do decide to actually give running a go.
Be nice to yourself.
If you miss a workout, that’s ok. Just don’t give up because you missed one workout. If you think a workout is too hard, that’s ok too. You’ll get better.
If you used to be in really good shape (anyone else used to play a high school sport?), it can be really hard when you can’t do the things you used to. Just remember, you’re starting from a different point now and it will get easier.

Good luck Nikki! It’s not easy for me either but little things can make it easier for us to make it a routine! And once it’s a routine – it does get a lot easier!
